The 7 Best Interior Design Trends You Should Watch For in 2020

Hello, hello my beautiful friends — it’s Tyna here! I’ve always found it fun to learn and keep up with the new trends in interior design because the world of decor and design is ever-changing. Some trends have stood the test of time while many others have become totally obsolete. As we draw closer toward this year’s end, I thought I’d share some of the newest trends being talked about for 2020!

#1. Natural Materials

I am absolutely here for this one because I love the look of a beautiful piece of reclaimed wood in an all-white space. It adds a calming warmth that can completely transform a room. Recently, I’ve been more drawn to many other natural materials like rattan, bamboo, hemp, marble, terracotta, Seagrass, concrete and linen. These attractive, earthy elements can bring an entire room to life.

The use of natural materials has maintained a stronghold in the interior design industry for quite some time now. The coolest part of this design trend is that it goes with any design style whether it be Modern, Rustic, Farmhouse or Boho. Adding natural materials will definitely highlight any space. Personally, I don’t see this trend ever being banished by the design gods.

Ok, before you do a double take, this is not a typo! You read that correctly — CARPET! I know the word alone can scare anyone away. Hearing the word ‘carpet’ gives me flashbacks to Granny’s wall-to-wall carpeted home. I’m definitely a hardwood and rug kind-of-girl, but during Milan’s 2019’s Design Week this design trend was everywhere the eyes could see. Some of those carpets were really stunning because there are now options for patterns, a wider range of colors and styles, so I can dig it. Because there is such a wide variety available, it’s easier than ever to get creative and liven up a space with fun carpet. I can’t wait to see how this trend in-use next year!

#3. Curved Lines

Everyone loves curves in all the right places! While most of us are familiar with straight lines and modern furniture with sharp edges, sexy waves and curves are making a comeback and I'm in love! Rounded pieces add a classic element to a space and softens its surroundings. Reminiscent of Old Hollywood, the vibe is inviting and glamorous. I have noticed a lot more rounded objects in modern design including rounded table corners, chairs, sofas, mirrors and even light fixtures.

#4. Paint & Colors

Each year, paint companies select their top colors of the year and it’s always exciting to see what they reveal! This year, Behr’s chosen color is cleverly titled “Back to Nature”.

Behr’s full palette for 2020 is inspired by natural earthy tones. The Earth, wind, fire, and the sky. Each color reminds me of the seasons changing from hues of burgundies, and terra-cottas for the fall. Creamy whites, grays, and charcoal for the winter. There is also pinks, greens, and yellows for spring and summer. I really love these muted colors and can’t wait to use some in our home. Do you have a favorite color from this palette? If so tell me about it and share it below.

#5. Biophilic Design

Inline with the environmental theme, this trend focuses on connecting the occupant to nature by creating a natural environment indoors. It’s a design trend that incorporates natural materials, natural light, large walls of greenery and vegetation to modern office spaces and industrial buildings, particularly. The addition of beautiful gardens within what is typically a cold and concrete space adds a calming energy that is much needed in the workplace. According to experts, Biophilic Design can reduce stress, improve cognitive function, creativity, and improve our health. A design trend that is both beautiful and beneficial to our well-being? Count me in!

#6. Repurposed & Recycled Design

As we are becoming more consciousness of the importance of preserving our planet, this is a trend I support and stand behind 100%. Lately, designers have been creating products from recycled materials such as plastic and wood, that are as stylish as they are eco-friendly.

Major retailer IKEA has made it a priority to focus on sustainable solutions and aim to remove all single-use of plastic by 2020. The home decor giant has implemented noteworthy practices such as the FÖRÄNDRING rice-straw collection that harvests residue that outputs air pollution when burned.

IKEA has also collaborated with designers like Spanish award-winning designer, Inma Bermúdez, on projects to clean plastic pollutants from the oceans. The collection, MUSSELBLOMMA, is made from recycled plastic, including PET plastic waste caught in nets of the Mediterranean Sea and collected by Spanish fishermen. How cool and inspiring is that? Hopefully other retailers will catch on and create some more of these fun, eco-friendly products and help save the planet at the same time!

#7. New Deco

I love the style and decor of the 1920’s so much so that Dave and I had an Art Deco-themed wedding. As you can imagine, I’m beyond excited. This updated trend is a more minimalist take on the classic Art Decor style. It’s filled with fun geometric shapes, moody colors and plush fabrics. I’ve noticed it popping up on wallpaper, tables, chairs, and lighting. Although it’s seemingly elegant and luxurious, Art Deco has always had a modern element. New Deco doesn’t disappoint in that area and allows you to get creative and even playful with its updated style. This trend proves that history definitely repeats itself so get out your flapper dress and grab a cocktail!
